Bonfire Memorial

During our time at Texas A&M, Jonathan and I visited the Bonfire Memorial.

The memorial was built in remembrance of the students that were tragically killed by the collapse of the Aggie Bonfire on November 18, 1999.  We walked around and read each pillar honoring the fallen.  I was most touched by that of Timothy Kerlee, Jr.

Timothy was a sophomore Mechanical Engineering major and part of the Corp of Cadets Squadron 16.  When the bonfire fell, he was trapped amongst the rubble.  When rescue workers tried to help him, he uttered, “Help my buddies first,” and directed them to five of his comrades whom he could see.

For his heroic act, Timothy was posthumously granted the Boy Scout’s highest award: the Medal of Merit.

Well done, Timothy…
