Church Camp

One of my favorite parts of summer growing up was attending church camp.  My first year at Camp Lakewood, I remember crying myself to sleep the first night since I missed my family, and I wasn’t sure how I would survive a week  in a cabin with strangers.  By the end of the week, though, we had all become friends.

In middle school, I attended Camp Adventure.  I was most enthralled by their high ropes course, which we all completed at the end of each week.  Not surprisingly, the counselors had to push me off the last platform that sent me soaring on a zip line over the pond.  I simply couldn’t bring myself to jump.  (I guess some things don’t change… I’m still not a thrill seeker!)

In high school, I attended Epworth Forest, a place that is near and dear to my heart.  What’s not to love about a place where it’s culturally acceptable to wear yawn as “fuzzies” around your neck and hug strangers?  I have so many cherished memories there – from celebrating my birthday during camp (and being sung to by all 1,000 campers) to rededicating my life each year to Christ during Commitment Night.

What are some of your favorite church camp memories?

  1. I’m taking our youth group up to Epworth the last weekend in August for a weekend long retreat! I’m so excited! I can’t wait to show them the thumbless Jesus statue. LOL!
