Forgotten God

Francis Chan wrote (in regards to church gatherings) in his book Forgotten God, “A growing and energetic gathering is not necessarily evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work.”  He went on to say, “Let’s be honest: if you combine a charismatic speaker, a talented worship band, and some hip, creative events, people will attend your church.  Yet this does not mean that the Holy Spirit of God is actively working and moving in the lives of people who are coming.”

What do you think?  Is the Holy Spirit of God actively involved in your gatherings?

  1. Wow – this is definitely food for thought!! Alternately, if your worship band is not phenominal and the speaker is not always charasmatic, the Holy Spirit can still do amazing things… good thoughts to chew on. Thanks, Serena!

  2. I have that book but I haven’t read it yet, but based on that excerpt, I think I will like it! One of my biggest pet peeves is that there’s so much emphasis on growing numerically and having all the fun stuff. I think when small churches try to do that, it can often be because they want to be just like the megachurches. Ok, I’ll stop now, because otherwise I’ll end up writing a dissertation-length comment here…
