Your Heart

“To love at all is to be vulnerable.  Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken.  If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal.  Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness.  But in that casket – safe, dark, motionless, airless – it will change.  It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.”
– C.S. Lewis (from The Four Loves)

  1. Wow, Serena. I read this book (The Four Loves) last year and that part hit me too. I have been reflecting recently on how God’s love is such a gift — simply the ability to love people. I John 4:7 “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God” and on to v. 16… “God is love. Whoever lives in love, lives in God, and God in him.” How amazing it is that we are loved so much by God that He sent His Son! Praying that He will bless you richly in this coming year.

  2. I love this quote and have used it to help counsel friends who’ve been hurt and are learning to love again. I read “A Grief Observed” by C.S. Lewis while I’ve been on break, maybe I should pick up “The Four Loves” and re-read it. Great quote!
