Atticus Finch (one of the main characters in To Kill a Mockingbird) says, Courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.
The Cowardly Lion sang a song about Courage in The Wizard of Oz. Though he, Dorothy, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow could have been considered “licked” facing the Wicked Witch of the West, they proceeded anyway and successfully reached Oz – and the Wizard. They saw it through, even in the midst of drowsy poppies and flying monkeys.
I’m reminded of the story of David and Goliath. If I were a betting woman, I probably wouldn’t have put money on David. He was a lowly shepherd, the unlikely hero who defeated the giant with just a few stones and an arm’s throw. He could have been considered “licked” before he began, but God saw him through. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I would have had the courage to face a 7-foot tall man with little more than pebbles and a slingshot.
Do you have courage?
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” -Deuteronomy 31:6
